Best iPhone Apps for NYC Commuters

By Miron Properties | Published on May 18,2010 at 8:14PM

The HopStop app functions just like the popular website.

In the midst of a public transportation budget crisis and increasingly nightmarish service cuts, traveling around New York City is not as easy as it used to be. Fortunately for us at the mercy of the MTA gods, there are some useful iPhone applications can help make your daily commute more navigable.

HopStop
Cost: Free
The HopStop app functions just like the popular website, offering detailed public transit directions and information whether you’re traveling by bus, subway, taxi, or foot. In addition to providing options for directions and maps, the app has a “My Trips” feature, which keeps track of your most recent route and allows you to save directions you may need a second time.

iTransNYC
Cost: $3.99
You never thought you’d see the day: a useful and accurate subway schedule for New York City’s resident straphangers. Like HopStop, iTransNYC takes service advisories into account when routing your commute, and gives walking directions to nearby stations. However, among this sophisticated app’s added pluses are that it even works when you are offline underground.

Exit Strategy NYC
Cost: $3.99
A unique take on the transportation app, Exit Strategy NYC tells commuters exactly which subway car corresponds to which exit at the desired destination so that they know the best place to board. Works offline as well.

Google Maps
Cost: Free
Given the utter confusion that inevitably accompanies ever-changing service cuts, sometimes the best option is to simply find another line. While it may seem a given, Google Maps is the best way to navigate the city. Unlike the other transportation apps, it boasts GPS, street views, and the search capability for almost anything. [Google Maps is contained within the Google Mobile application.]
