Carnegie Hill

The Carnegie Hill section of Manhattan is an exclusive neighborhood, full of beautiful townhouses that are rarely for sale because their owners are likely to hold onto them. The area’s larger buildings, which tend not to be too tall, offer prewar apartments of six or seven rooms, known as “Classic Sixes” and “Classic Sevens.”

The area is named for one of its most famous residents, steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie. Today, his landmark family mansion is the Cooper-Hewitt

Museum on 91st Street and Fifth Avenue, a branch of the Smithsonian dedicated to historic and contemporary design.

Carnegie Hill is rich in culture, home to two of the most popular spots along Museum Mile, the Metropolitan Museum and the Guggenheim Museum.

The 92nd Street Y offers a variety of arts programs. Shopping in the area is varied; while Madison Avenue boasting some of the city’s most upscale retailers, there is still a place for local shopkeepers along Lexington.

Where: Uptown on the East Side, starting at 86th Street to 110th Street, from Lexington Avenue to Central Park

Nearest subway: The 6 train services the area, with local stops along Lexington Avenue.
