“Sounds in Motion” to Help Foster Learning in Tenafly Schools

“Sounds in Motion,” was created to pair physical movement with phonemes as a supplement and intervention program as a response to the state’s objective to provide literacy training to those students who have special needs. Additionally, with aid from speech and language specialists, phonemic awareness is brought to light and performance in this area can be assessed and, if need be, the proper remediation can be offered.   Its designer, Frances Santore, looks for this program to help enable teachers to work collaboratively in their classrooms with visiting speech and language specialists. The goal: further develop reading and writing skills by utilizing body movements that correlate to various characteristics of speech sound and increase a student’s receptive vocabulary.
Based on pitch, duration, intensity, tension, and place of the articulators, the curriculum matches the appropriate body movements with the different sounds being taught. “Sounds in Motion” thereby aids students in such a way so that they can increase their learning capacity in order to gain the aptitude to identify and manipulate the sounds they hear, translating them into words.
Sometimes stories are used during a session to help the students learn the alphabet or new vocabulary words and each session also includes a review from previous sessions.  After the brief body movement review, students are then introduced to two or more phonemes, as well as given a specific language or listening activity to participate in.
The “Sounds in Motion” program is being taught in sessions which last about 30 to 40 minutes and occur once a week for a total of 15 sessions throughout term.
