Tenafly Awarded "New Jersey Healthy Town" Designation
What does it take to receive the "Healthy Town" designation? Aside from a willingness to share program information with other communities, eligible municipalities must meet certain campaign requirements. First, the borough must have participated in the Mayors Wellness Campaign for at least year and second, participants must have established sustainable programs in each of the following categories: Community in Motion, Youth in Motion, Seniors in Motion and Employers in Motion.
So how did Tenafly measure up? As the 17th community in the state to receive recognition and the honorable designation of "New Jersey Healthy Town," Tenafly qualified by instituting the following wellness programs in order to satisfy the campaign category requirement:
In addition to numerous youth programs offered by Tenafly schools and the Tenafly Recreation Department, Youth in Motion consisted of events such as "Thrill the World Dance Event" and "Walk to School Day." Seniors welcomed the notion of Seniors in Motion by participating in various activities at the Tenafly Senior Center and a Night of Fun & Fitness as well as walking in the Tenafly 5K. Employers jumped on the fitness bandwagon by partaking in the annual "Walk at Work Day."
Since 2007, the statewide effort to get more residents walking, dancing, and just plain having more fun with fitness, now involves more than half of all New Jersey communities!
