Tenafly Officials Take Steps Towards Creation of Junior Fire Department
A plan, nearly five years in the making, has finally come to fruition. The Tenafly Mayor and Council meeting held on January 14th unanimously welcomed a new ordinance proposing a Junior Fire Department program in Tenafly, thus creating Tenafly's Junior Firefighters Auxillary, encouraging participation from interested volunteers ages 14 - 18.
More duties for these brave volunteers will become available as the number of members increase, however, according to the language of the ordinace, "no member in the junior program will be required to perform any duty that would expose them to the same degree of danger as a regular Tenafly Fire Department member... [in reference to the discussed insurance liability issues and option of purchasing extra insurance] members of the junior program will be covered to the maximum extent possible in case of any accidents."
The selected members of Tenafly's Junior Firefighters Auxillary will be enrolled in firefighting classes (with approval from parents), as well as participate in hands-on training and assist at fire scenes.
All applicants for the Tenafly Junior Fire Department program must be a current resident of Tenafly as well as having been determined by a physician's examination to be in "good health."
